Narrative voice

Narrative voice is the perspective and expressive manner through which a story is told, shaped by who speaks, what they know, and how they speak.

Narrator: The voice or agent that presents a story’s events to an audience. The narrator is the speaking presence through which narrative voice becomes audible.
Unreliable narrator: A narrator whose account readers have reason to doubt or reinterpret. Unreliability makes the gap between a narrator’s voice and events part of the story.
Author: The person who creates a written work. An author creates a narrative voice but is not identical to the voice that tells the story.
Epistolary novel: A novel told through documents such as letters, diary entries, or emails. Its changing documents make each narrator’s distinct voice part of the novel’s structure.
The Great Gatsby: A 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald narrated by Nick Carraway. Nick’s limited, reflective account shapes how Gatsby and his world are judged.
Narrative point of view: The position from which a narrative presents events and information. Point of view determines whose perceptions and knowledge shape the telling.
Omniscient narrator: A narrator with broad access to characters’ thoughts and events beyond any one viewpoint. This voice can move among minds and explain events beyond a character’s knowledge.
Tone (literature): The attitude a literary work conveys toward its subject or audience. Tone is an attitude conveyed by the voice, not the voice’s overall speaking identity.
Autofiction: Fiction that draws on an author’s life while reshaping autobiographical material. Its blurred boundary between author and narrator makes voice central to how truth is perceived.
Lolita: A 1955 novel by Vladimir Nabokov narrated by Humbert Humbert. Humbert’s eloquence and self-justification make the narrator’s voice ethically unsettling.
