Narrator

A narrator is the voice or agent that tells a story within a narrative. Narrators may be characters or external voices, and their knowledge and reliability shape how events are presented.

Narrative: A representation of events connected in time and presented as a story. The narrator is the voice or agent that presents a narrative.
First-person narrative: A narrative told using a speaker who refers to themself as “I” or “we.” This form makes the narrator an explicit speaking presence.
Character: A person, animal, or other entity represented as acting or appearing in a story. A character may be told about without serving as the voice that tells the story.
Moby-Dick: Herman Melville's novel about the whaling ship Pequod and its pursuit of a white whale. Ishmael's first-person voice frames the novel's wider account of the voyage.
Narrative voice: The distinctive verbal presence through which a narrative is told. It names the expressive presence readers hear as the narrator.
Third-person narrative: A narrative that refers to characters as “he,” “she,” “they,” or by name. Its narrator tells events without using first-person self-reference.
Narratee: The audience or addressee addressed by a narrator within a narrative. The narratee receives the narration; the narrator produces it.
The Great Gatsby: F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel narrated by Nick Carraway, who recounts Jay Gatsby's story. Nick's limited perspective shapes what the novel reveals about Gatsby.
Point of view (literature): The position from which a story's events and information are presented. Narrative perspective depends on what the narrator can perceive or know.
Omniscient narrator: A narrator with broad access to characters' thoughts, events, and information beyond any one viewpoint. This narrator can disclose knowledge unavailable to a single character.
