Nasal mucosa

The moist tissue lining the nasal cavity, containing blood vessels and mucus-producing cells. It warms, humidifies, and filters inhaled air and supports smell.

Mucociliary clearance: The coordinated movement of mucus and cilia that transports particles out of the respiratory tract. Nasal cilia move particle-trapping mucus toward the throat for removal.
Nasal cavity: The air-filled space behind the nose that extends from the nostrils to the throat. The mucosa is the tissue lining this space.
Allergic rhinitis: Inflammation of the nasal lining triggered by an allergic response to inhaled substances. It causes itching, sneezing, and congestion through mucosal immune reactions.
Vestibular epithelium: Skin-like tissue lining the nasal vestibule just inside the nostrils, including hairs that trap large particles. It differs from the respiratory mucosa deeper in the nose in structure and surface covering.
Nasal cycle: The alternating congestion and decongestion of the nasal passages, usually over several hours. Blood flow shifts between nasal sides, changing airflow and mucosal swelling.
Mucous membrane: A moist tissue lining body passages that open to the outside or connect internal spaces. Nasal mucosa is one specialized example of this widespread lining tissue.
Nonallergic rhinitis: Nasal inflammation and symptoms not caused by an allergen-specific immune response. Irritants and other triggers can inflame the mucosa without allergy.
Oral mucosa: The moist tissue lining the mouth, adapted to chewing, taste, and protection from friction. It shares a moist lining function but faces different mechanical and sensory demands.
Respiratory epithelium: Ciliated epithelial tissue with mucus-secreting cells that lines much of the conducting airways. This cell layer covers much of the nasal cavity and drives its clearance system.
Nasal glands: Glands in the nasal lining that secrete fluid and mucus onto its surface. Their secretions help maintain the moist, protective layer on nasal mucosa.
