Natamycin

Natamycin is a polyene antifungal compound that binds fungal cell-membrane sterols. It treats fungal infections and inhibits mold and yeast growth on certain foods.

Ergosterol: A sterol found in fungal cell membranes that helps maintain membrane structure and function. Natamycin binds ergosterol, disrupting fungal membrane processes without simply making pores.
Fungal keratitis: A fungal infection of the cornea that can threaten vision. Natamycin eye drops are a standard treatment, especially for filamentous fungal keratitis.
Polyene: An organic compound containing multiple carbon–carbon double bonds separated by single bonds. Natamycin’s conjugated polyene structure gives it its characteristic chemical family and properties.
Azole antifungal: An antifungal drug that inhibits enzymes involved in fungal ergosterol synthesis. Azoles reduce sterol production, whereas natamycin binds sterol already present in membranes.
Polyene antibiotics: A family of antifungal compounds characterized by multiple conjugated double bonds and affinity for membrane sterols. Natamycin belongs to this family, whose members share sterol-binding properties.
Natamycin ophthalmic suspension: A topical eye medicine containing natamycin, commonly formulated as a suspension. This formulation delivers natamycin to the corneal surface while limiting systemic exposure.
Streptomyces natalensis: A soil-dwelling bacterium that produces natamycin as a secondary metabolite. This microorganism is the natural source from which natamycin was first isolated.
Nystatin: A polyene antifungal drug used mainly for localized Candida infections. Nystatin is a related polyene, but natamycin is especially established for fungal eye infections and food surfaces.
Amphotericin B: A polyene antifungal drug used mainly for serious systemic fungal infections. Unlike natamycin, amphotericin B can form membrane pores and is used systemically.
Food preservation: Methods used to slow spoilage and extend the safe storage life of food. Natamycin is applied to some foods to suppress surface mold and yeast.
