Nathan Bedford Forrest

Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Confederate cavalry commander during the American Civil War and later the Ku Klux Klan’s first Grand Wizard. His military reputation and role in white supremacist violence remain deeply contested.

Battle of Fort Pillow: An 1864 Civil War battle in Tennessee followed by the killing of captured Union soldiers, including many Black troops. Forrest’s forces captured the fort; the killing of surrendering troops made the battle notorious.
