National Front (Colombia)

A 1958–1974 agreement in which Colombia’s Liberal and Conservative parties alternated the presidency and divided public offices, ending their formal competition for power.

Alternation of the Presidency in Colombia: The National Front rule that assigned Colombia’s presidency alternately to Liberal and Conservative candidates. Presidential rotation was the pact’s most visible guarantee of parity.
La Violencia: A period of intense partisan violence in Colombia, conventionally dated from 1948 to the late 1950s. The pact was designed to halt the Liberal–Conservative bloodshed associated with this period.
Alberto Lleras Camargo: A Colombian Liberal politician who served as president from 1958 to 1962 and helped negotiate the National Front. He negotiated the pact and became its first president.

Laureano Gómez: A Colombian Conservative politician who served as president from 1950 to 1953 and co-negotiated the Benidorm Pact. His negotiations with Lleras Camargo helped set the arrangement in motion.
ANAPO: The National Popular Alliance, a Colombian political movement founded by former dictator Gustavo Rojas Pinilla. Its 1970 electoral challenge exposed discontent with restricted party competition.
Colombian Liberal Party: A Colombian political party founded in 1848, historically associated with liberal and reformist currents. The Liberals were one of the two parties bound by the pact.
National Constituent Assembly of Colombia (1954): A body convened under Gustavo Rojas Pinilla that approved constitutional changes during his rule. Its extension of Rojas Pinilla’s presidency intensified opposition to military rule.
