National Health Service

The National Health Service is the United Kingdom’s publicly funded healthcare system, established in 1948. Its services are largely free at the point of use and funded mainly through taxation.

NHS Constitution: A statement of the principles, rights, and responsibilities governing England’s National Health Service. It sets out the values and patient entitlements that guide NHS services in England.
Beveridge Report: A 1942 British government report proposing social insurance and measures against poverty, disease, ignorance, squalor, and idleness. Its proposals helped shape the postwar welfare settlement surrounding the NHS.
Beveridge model: A healthcare financing model in which government funds services mainly through taxation and often provides them publicly. The NHS is a prominent example of this tax-funded approach.
Universal health care: A system in which all people can access needed health services without financial hardship. The NHS became a major national example of universal healthcare provision.
NHS England: The public body responsible for planning and commissioning healthcare services in England. It organizes much of the service delivery and funding structure in England.
Aneurin Bevan: The Welsh Labour politician who, as health minister, led the creation of Britain’s NHS. Bevan drove the legislation and negotiations that established the service.
Bismarck model: A healthcare financing model based chiefly on regulated social insurance funded by employers and employees. It contrasts with the NHS’s primary reliance on general taxation.
Health inequality: Differences in health outcomes and access to care between social groups. Universal entitlement does not eliminate unequal health outcomes or barriers to access.
NHS Scotland: The publicly funded healthcare system serving Scotland. It shows how the NHS operates as a devolved system rather than one UK-wide organization.
National Health Service Act 1946: The British law that established a comprehensive health service in England and Wales. The act supplied the legal framework for the NHS launched in 1948.
