National Legionary State

Romania’s fascist regime from September 1940 to February 1941, governed jointly by Ion Antonescu and the Iron Guard. Its collapse followed the Iron Guard’s failed rebellion and pogrom in Bucharest.

Ion Antonescu: Romanian military officer and authoritarian ruler who led Romania during much of World War II. He shared power with the Iron Guard before suppressing its revolt in January 1941.
Second Vienna Award: A German-Italian arbitration in August 1940 that transferred Northern Transylvania from Romania to Hungary. The territorial loss intensified the crisis that undermined King Carol II.
Bucharest pogrom: The January 1941 massacre and persecution of Jews in Bucharest during the Legionary Rebellion. Iron Guard members used the revolt to unleash a deadly pogrom against the city’s Jews.
Antonescu's Romania: Romania under Ion Antonescu’s authoritarian rule from 1940 until 1944. After suppressing the Iron Guard, Antonescu ruled without its participation.
Horia Sima: Romanian fascist politician who led the Iron Guard after Corneliu Zelea Codreanu’s death. As deputy prime minister, he represented the Legionary leadership in the coalition.

Jilava massacre: The November 1940 killing of 64 political prisoners by Iron Guard members at Jilava Prison, Romania. The massacre showed how Legionary revenge killings accompanied the regime’s consolidation.
