National Olympic Committee

A National Olympic Committee is an organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee to develop and represent the Olympic Movement in a country or territory.

Olympic Charter: The governing document that sets the rules and principles of the Olympic Movement. It defines NOCs’ authority, duties, and relationship with the International Olympic Committee.
Olympic Movement: The international network of organizations, athletes, and others governed by the Olympic Charter. An NOC is the national-level organization within this broader movement.
United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee: The federally chartered organization that governs United States participation in the Olympic and Paralympic movements. It illustrates an NOC with responsibilities extending beyond Olympic sport.
International Paralympic Committee: The international organization governing the Paralympic Movement and organizing the Paralympic Games. It governs a distinct movement, although some NOCs also manage national Paralympic responsibilities.
International Olympic Committee: The international organization that leads the Olympic Movement and organizes the Olympic Games. It recognizes NOCs and oversees their place in the Olympic system.
Olympic Games: An international multisport event held in summer and winter editions under the Olympic Movement. The Games are the most visible event for which NOCs prepare national delegations.
Hong Kong Olympic Committee: The organization recognized by the International Olympic Committee to represent Hong Kong in the Olympic Movement. Hong Kong demonstrates that an NOC may represent a territory rather than a sovereign state.
National Paralympic Committee: A country’s or territory’s organization that represents and develops its Paralympic movement. It has a Paralympic mandate that may be separate from the NOC’s Olympic mandate.
National Olympic Committee recognition: The International Olympic Committee’s formal approval of an organization as a National Olympic Committee. Recognition determines which organizations may officially represent a country or territory in the Olympic Movement.
National sports governing body: An organization that governs a particular sport within a country. Unlike a single-sport governing body, an NOC represents the Olympic Movement across sports.
