National People's Congress

China's national legislature, comprising deputies selected through an indirect electoral system. It elects senior state officials, amends the constitution, and enacts laws.

National People's Congress Standing Committee: The National People's Congress body that exercises legislative and other powers when the full congress is not in session. It handles much of the congress's continuing work between annual plenary sessions.
National People's Congress election: The indirect process through which deputies are chosen for China's national legislature. Deputies reach the national level through elections by provincial-level people's congresses.
Common Program of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference: The 1949 foundational political document that served as a provisional constitution for the People's Republic of China. It established the political framework before the first National People's Congress convened.
