National Revolutionary Army

The National Revolutionary Army was the armed force of the Republic of China, led by the Kuomintang. It fought in the Northern Expedition, the Second Sino-Japanese War, and the Chinese Civil War.

Whampoa Military Academy: A military academy founded in 1924 by the Kuomintang with Soviet assistance to train officers for its armed forces. Its graduates supplied many of the NRA's commanders and strengthened Chiang Kai-shek's political base.
Northern Expedition: The Kuomintang-led military campaign of 1926–1928 that defeated or absorbed rival warlords and unified much of China. The NRA's early campaigns established Kuomintang rule across much of the country.
Chiang Kai-shek: A Chinese Nationalist military and political leader who headed the Kuomintang government for much of 1928–1949. As commander-in-chief, he directed the NRA through the war against Japan and the civil war.
Chinese Red Army: The armed forces of the Chinese Communist Party before their reorganization as the Eighth Route Army and New Fourth Army. It fought alongside the NRA against Japan, then became its principal civil-war adversary.
Conscription in China: The systems through which Chinese governments compelled civilians to serve in the armed forces. Mass conscription expanded the NRA while exposing recruits to coercion, disease, and high mortality.
Battle of Shanghai (1937): A major 1937 battle between Chinese and Japanese forces that lasted more than three months. NRA units fought heavily to defend Shanghai, suffering severe losses against Japan's superior firepower.
He Yingqin: A senior Nationalist general and politician who served as China's minister of war and chief of the general staff. He was among the most influential commanders in the NRA's central military hierarchy.
Eighth Route Army: A Communist-led force formally incorporated into the National Revolutionary Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Its nominal place in the NRA concealed an independent Communist command and political organization.
German military mission in China: A group of German military advisers who helped modernize Chinese forces during the 1920s and 1930s. German advisers trained and reorganized elite NRA units before cooperation ended in 1938.
Battle of Wuhan: A large 1938 campaign in which Japanese forces captured Wuhan after months of fighting. The NRA's defense of Wuhan illustrated both its resistance and its inability to stop Japan's advance.
