National Rugby League

The National Rugby League (NRL) is the top professional rugby league competition, contested by clubs from Australia and New Zealand.

NRL Premiership: The annual competition in which NRL clubs contest the league title. The premiership is the season-long contest culminating in the NRL champion.
NRL Grand Final: The final match of the NRL season, contested by the two teams that advance through the finals. It decides the premiership and is the league’s defining annual match.
New South Wales Rugby League: The governing body and competition that organized top-level rugby league in New South Wales from 1908. The NRL developed from the Sydney-centered competition administered by this body.
National Rugby League Players Association: The organization representing professional rugby league players in Australia’s NRL competition. It negotiates player conditions and collective agreements with the league.
NRL finals system: The playoff format that determines the NRL grand finalists and premiership winner. The finals turn regular-season standings into a knockout route to the title.
State of Origin: An annual rugby league series between teams representing New South Wales and Queensland. Origin draws on many NRL players but is a separate representative competition.
Australian Rugby League: The national rugby league organization that governed the Australian game before the 1998 merger. Its competition merged with the rival Super League competition to establish the NRL.
NRL judiciary: The system that reviews alleged on-field misconduct and determines disciplinary sanctions in the NRL. Its rulings affect player availability and how the league polices dangerous play.
Rugby league: A team sport in which two sides advance the ball by carrying or kicking it and score primarily through tries. The NRL is the leading professional competition in this code of football.
Melbourne Storm: A Melbourne-based professional rugby league club competing in the NRL. The Storm are one of the NRL’s most successful modern clubs.
