National Security Agency

The National Security Agency (NSA) is a U.S. government agency that collects foreign signals intelligence and protects national security information and communications systems.

Signals intelligence: Intelligence derived from intercepted communications and other electronic signals. The NSA’s foreign collection mission is a major part of this broader intelligence discipline.
Armed Forces Security Agency: A U.S. military cryptologic organization established in 1949 and replaced by the NSA in 1952. The NSA succeeded this agency after its postwar coordination problems.
Director of the National Security Agency: The senior official who leads the NSA and also heads the Central Security Service. The director is the agency’s principal leader and public representative.
Five Eyes: An intelligence-sharing partnership among Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The NSA shares signals intelligence with its closest anglophone intelligence partners.
Global surveillance disclosures (2013–present): Public revelations beginning in 2013 about government electronic surveillance programs, based largely on leaked classified documents. The disclosures exposed the scale and reach of NSA collection programs.
Cryptanalysis: The study of recovering information from encrypted or otherwise concealed communications without the key. Cryptanalysis helps turn intercepted signals into usable intelligence.
National Security Act of 1947: U.S. legislation that reorganized national defense and intelligence institutions after World War II. It established the institutional framework in which the NSA was later created.
William O. Baker: An American scientist and intelligence official who served as deputy director of the NSA from 1957 to 1960. His tenure reflects the agency’s early reliance on scientific and technical leadership.
National Security Agency Utah Data Center: A large NSA data-storage and processing facility near Bluffdale, Utah, opened in 2014. The facility represents infrastructure built to support large-scale intelligence data handling.
USA Freedom Act: A 2015 U.S. law that ended bulk collection of domestic telephone metadata under Section 215 and changed surveillance procedures. The legislation followed public controversy over NSA bulk telephone-record collection.
