NATO enlargement

NATO enlargement is the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization through the admission of new member states, from twelve founding members in 1949 to thirty-two members in 2024.

North Atlantic Treaty: The 1949 treaty that established NATO and its collective-defense commitment. Its Article 10 provides the treaty basis for admitting additional European states.
Article 10 of the North Atlantic Treaty: The treaty provision allowing NATO members, by unanimous agreement, to invite eligible European states to accede. It sets the alliance’s legal route for expanding membership.
