Natural magic

Natural magic was a Renaissance approach to nature that sought hidden powers and correspondences among natural things, using them to produce effects without invoking supernatural intervention.

Correspondence (occultism): A proposed relation linking different things through shared qualities, symbols, or cosmic influence. Natural magic treated similarities between objects as clues to powers that could act across distance.
Hermeticism: A religious and philosophical tradition associated with writings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. Hermetic texts presented nature as an interconnected system responsive to human knowledge.
Giovanni Pico della Mirandola: An Italian Renaissance philosopher who defended learned magic and connected it with Christian theology and Kabbalah. Pico argued that natural magic could reveal divine order rather than oppose religion.
Ceremonial magic: Ritual practice that invokes spirits or supernatural powers through prescribed words and actions. Natural magicians distinguished their work from rites that depended on spiritual intermediaries.
Natural history: The systematic description and study of plants, animals, minerals, and other natural objects. Collecting rare properties and marvels helped expand early modern catalogues of nature.
Sympathy and antipathy: An early natural-philosophical theory that attraction and repulsion connect substances and explain their effects. These invisible relations offered natural magicians a mechanism for remote action.
Neoplatonism: A philosophical tradition deriving from Plato that describes reality as ordered by emanations from a highest principle. Its hierarchy of being helped explain how influence could pass between cosmic levels.
Giambattista della Porta: An Italian scholar whose Natural Magic described unusual effects of plants, animals, optics, and mechanics. His widely read book brought practical marvels under the name of natural magic.
Witchcraft: Practices and beliefs involving harmful or beneficial magic, often attributed to alleged dealings with spirits. Authorities could classify natural magical acts as illicit witchcraft despite claims of natural causes.
Early modern medicine: Medical theory and practice in Europe from the Renaissance through the eighteenth century. Physicians used ideas about hidden powers to explain remedies whose effects lacked clear mechanisms.
