Nature conservation

Nature conservation is the protection and management of wild species, habitats, and ecosystems to preserve biodiversity and natural processes.

Protected area: A geographically defined area managed to conserve nature over the long term. Boundaries and management rules shield habitats and ecological processes from damaging uses.
Yellowstone National Park: A United States national park established in 1872, spanning parts of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Its establishment became an influential model for setting aside land for public protection.
IUCN Red List: A global assessment system that classifies species by their risk of extinction. It identifies threatened species and provides evidence for setting conservation priorities.
Biodiversity: The variety of life at genetic, species, and ecosystem levels. Conservation aims to maintain biodiversity and the ecological relationships it comprises.
Natural resource management: The planning and use of natural resources to meet human needs over time. It often centers resource use, while conservation gives biodiversity and ecological integrity explicit priority.
Wildlife corridor: A habitat connection that enables organisms to move between separated natural areas. Corridors counter habitat fragmentation by restoring movement between populations.
John Muir: A Scottish-American naturalist and writer who advocated preserving wild landscapes in the United States. Muir helped shape preservationist arguments for protecting wilderness from development.
Endangered species: A species facing a very high risk of extinction in the wild. Preventing extinction is a central goal of species-focused conservation.
Ecosystem services: The benefits people obtain from ecosystems, including food, water regulation, and cultural value. Healthy ecosystems can sustain benefits that conservation helps maintain.
Preservationism: An environmental philosophy that favors protecting nature from direct human use or alteration. Preservationism is a stricter approach than conservation strategies that permit sustainable use.
