Naturphilosophie

Naturphilosophie was a philosophical approach, especially influential in German Romanticism around 1800, that sought unity and organizing principles across nature. It treated natural processes as interconnected and often emphasized development, polarity, and living organization.

Polarity (philosophy): A philosophical principle that explains phenomena through interacting opposing forces or poles. Naturphilosophie used opposing forces such as attraction and repulsion to explain natural processes.
Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling: A German philosopher whose work developed an influential account of nature as dynamic, productive, and interconnected. His writings made Naturphilosophie a central part of German Idealism.

Morphology (biology): The study of the form and structure of organisms and their parts. Goethe's account of plant form sought transformations underlying the diversity of visible structures.
Empiricism: The philosophical view that knowledge derives primarily from sensory experience and observation. Naturphilosophie sought organizing principles beyond the accumulation of observations.
Self-organization: The emergence of organized patterns or structures through interactions within a system, without external direction. Naturphilosophers sought principles by which order could arise within nature itself.
Lorenz Oken: A German naturalist and philosopher who organized the natural world through a speculative system of correspondences and development. His ambitious classifications show Naturphilosophie's reach into natural history.
