Nauru

Nauru is an island country in Micronesia, in the central Pacific Ocean. It is one of the world’s smallest countries by area and population.

German New Guinea: A German colonial territory in the western Pacific that existed from 1884 to 1914. Germany annexed Nauru in 1888 as part of its Pacific colonial expansion.
Phosphate rock: A sedimentary rock rich in phosphate minerals, used mainly to produce agricultural fertilizer. Its deposits made Nauru a major exporter before reserves were largely depleted.
Micronesia: A region of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean, including Nauru. Nauru belongs to this Pacific region despite lying near its southeastern edge.

Nauru phosphate industry: The extraction and export of phosphate rock from Nauru, especially during the twentieth century. Phosphate mining financed the country after independence while transforming its land.
Nauru phosphate royalty trust: A fund established to invest phosphate revenues for Nauru’s future generations. The trust was meant to convert finite mineral wealth into lasting national assets.
