Navarre

Navarre is an autonomous community in northern Spain, bordering France and the Basque Autonomous Community. It preserves the name and much of the territory of the medieval Kingdom of Navarre.

Kingdom of Navarre: A medieval and early modern kingdom centered on territories on both sides of the western Pyrenees. The present community occupies the southern core of this historic kingdom.
Pamplona: The capital city of Navarre in northern Spain. It is the community's political center and largest city.
Chartered Community of Navarre: The official constitutional designation of Navarre as an autonomous community within Spain. Its chartered status expresses the region's distinctive legal autonomy.
San Fermín: An annual festival in Pamplona honoring Saint Fermin, held in July. Its bull runs and public celebrations have made Navarre's capital internationally known.
Sancho III of Pamplona: A king of Pamplona who ruled much of Christian Iberia in the early eleventh century. His reign expanded the predecessor polity from which Navarre developed.
Pyrenees: A mountain range separating the Iberian Peninsula from the rest of continental Europe. The range forms Navarre's northern border and has long shaped its routes and settlement.
Navarrese regional government: The executive institution that governs the autonomous community of Navarre. It administers devolved responsibilities under Navarre's charter of autonomy.
Camino de Santiago: A network of pilgrimage routes leading to the shrine of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela. The route crosses Navarre and helped connect it to medieval European travel and exchange.
Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa: A 1212 battle in which a coalition of Christian Iberian kingdoms defeated the Almohad caliphate. Navarre's King Sancho VII fought in the coalition, linking the kingdom to a turning point in Iberian history.
Ebro: A river in northeastern Spain that flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Its valley links southern Navarre to the wider Ebro basin.
