Navigation Acts

The Navigation Acts were British laws that regulated colonial trade and reserved much shipping for English or British vessels. They shaped the commercial relationship between Britain and its colonies.

Enumerated Goods: Colonial commodities that English law required to be shipped to England or another English possession. These designated exports were the clearest way the Acts channeled colonial commerce toward English markets.
Mercantilism: An economic doctrine that treats state power as strengthened by controlling trade and accumulating wealth. It supplied the assumptions behind regulating colonial commerce for imperial advantage.
Salutary Neglect: Britain’s long, uneven practice of loosely enforcing imperial regulations in its American colonies. Its lax enforcement often blunted the restrictions’ effects before officials sought stricter compliance.
French Colonial Empire: The overseas territories and trading networks governed by France, including colonies in North America and the Caribbean. French colonial trade followed a competing imperial system and attracted British colonial commerce.
Staple Act 1663: An English law requiring most European goods destined for the colonies to pass through England. It extended control beyond colonial exports by routing imports through English ports.
First Anglo-Dutch War: A naval conflict between the English Commonwealth and the Dutch Republic from 1652 to 1654. Commercial rivalry with the Dutch helped spur England’s 1651 shipping restrictions.
Writs of Assistance: General search warrants used by British customs officers to investigate suspected smuggling in colonial America. They enabled customs enforcement that colonists criticized as intrusive and arbitrary.
Dutch Empire: The overseas trading network and territories controlled by the Dutch Republic and its successor state. Dutch shipping and merchants were central rivals targeted by England’s early restrictions.
Molasses Act: A 1733 British law imposing duties on foreign molasses and sugar imported into mainland North America. It targeted colonial trade with French and Dutch Caribbean producers.
Navigation Act 1651: An English law requiring most imports to arrive on English ships or ships of the goods’ producing country. This measure established the shipping principle later Acts expanded and revised.
