Nazca culture

An ancient culture of Peru’s southern coast, flourishing roughly from 100 BCE to 800 CE. It is known for polychrome pottery, monumental geoglyphs, and settlements sustained in an arid landscape.

Nazca Desert: An arid region of southern Peru containing the Nazca geoglyphs and ancient settlements. Its exceptionally dry terrain preserved archaeological remains and shaped where communities could live.
Puquios: Underground aqueducts in southern Peru that channel groundwater to the surface. These waterworks supplied some Nazca-region communities through dry seasons.
Nazca Lines: A group of large geoglyphs etched into the desert surface of southern Peru. They are the best-known Nazca constructions and include lines, geometric forms, and animal figures.
Julio C. Tello: A Peruvian archaeologist who helped establish the study of ancient Andean cultures. His archaeological work helped define the cultural sequence that includes Paracas and Nazca.
Maria Reiche: A German-Peruvian mathematician and archaeologist known for decades of study and advocacy for the Nazca Lines. Her measurements and conservation efforts made the geoglyphs widely known and helped protect them.
Río Grande de Nazca: A river system in southern Peru whose valleys drain toward the Pacific coast. Nazca settlement and agriculture centered on river valleys within the surrounding desert.
Huarango: A hardy tree of Peru’s coastal deserts, valued for food, fuel, and shade. Huarango wood and trees supported daily life and helped stabilize fragile valley environments.
Nazca pottery: Painted ceramic vessels made in ancient southern Peru, often bearing vivid colors and intricate figures. Its polychrome imagery is a defining expression of Nazca craft and visual culture.
Max Uhle: A German archaeologist who conducted influential excavations in Peru and other parts of the Americas. His research at the south coast contributed to early archaeological accounts of Nazca culture.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: A cultural or natural site recognized under the UNESCO World Heritage Convention for outstanding universal value. The Nazca Lines’ inscription brought international attention to their preservation.
