Knowra Nazca Lines Nazca Lines The Nazca Lines are ancient geoglyphs etched into Peru’s Nazca Desert, depicting animals, plants, geometric forms, and long straight lines. Their vast scale and preservation in the arid landscape make them visible from the air.
Geoglyph : A large design or figure created on the ground by arranging or removing stones, soil, or vegetation. The Nazca figures are among the best-known examples of this ground-scale art form.
Paracas culture : An ancient culture of Peru’s south coast that preceded and overlapped with the early Nazca culture. Some geoglyphs in the region may predate the Nazca tradition and relate to Paracas communities.
Pilgrimage : A journey to a place regarded as sacred or spiritually significant. Some interpretations link processional routes and lines to ceremonial journeys.
Erich von Däniken : A Swiss author who popularized claims that ancient monuments were influenced by extraterrestrial visitors. His alien interpretations of the lines are not supported by archaeological evidence.
Desert pavement : A surface layer of closely packed stones that forms in arid environments as finer particles are removed. Dark stones cover the lighter soil beneath, creating contrast when stones are cleared.

Nazca Lines astronomical hypothesis : The proposal that some Nazca geoglyphs mark celestial events or align with astronomical bodies. Astronomical alignments have been proposed, but they do not explain the entire geoglyph complex.
