Nazi ghettos

Nazi ghettos were enclosed or restricted urban areas where Nazi Germany and its allies forced Jews to live during the Holocaust, often under extreme deprivation and coercion.

Ghettoization: The forced concentration of a population in a segregated urban district. Nazi ghettos were the most extensive forced ghettoization campaign in modern European history.
Warsaw Ghetto: The largest Nazi ghetto, established in occupied Warsaw and sealed in November 1940. Its enormous population and 1943 uprising made it a defining case of ghetto life and resistance.
Adam Czerniaków: The chairman of the Warsaw Jewish Council who died by suicide in 1942. His refusal to assist with the deportation of children shows the limits and cost of council authority.
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising: An armed Jewish revolt against German forces during the Warsaw Ghetto’s final liquidation in 1943. It became the largest act of armed Jewish resistance during the Holocaust.
Nazi concentration camps: Detention and forced-labor camps established and operated by Nazi Germany and its allies. Unlike most ghettos, concentration camps were purpose-built detention sites beyond ordinary urban neighborhoods.
Judenrat: A Jewish council established by German authorities to administer a ghetto under occupation. Councils carried out orders under coercion while trying to secure food and services for residents.
Łódź Ghetto: A major Nazi ghetto in occupied Poland, known to German authorities as Litzmannstadt. Its prolonged existence and extensive forced labor show how exploitation shaped ghetto policy.
Mordechai Anielewicz: A Jewish resistance leader who commanded the Jewish Combat Organization during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. He helped organize armed resistance when German forces began the ghetto’s final liquidation.
Białystok Ghetto uprising: An armed revolt by Jewish resistance fighters during the German liquidation of the Białystok Ghetto in 1943. It shows that armed resistance also arose in ghettos beyond Warsaw.
Nazi extermination camps: Facilities built by Nazi Germany primarily to murder people on a mass scale. Ghettos confined Jews in cities; extermination camps were designed for mass killing.
