Ndebele Kingdom

The Ndebele Kingdom was a nineteenth-century African state founded by Mzilikazi and centered in the region of present-day Zimbabwe. Its people, the amaNdebele, built a powerful kingdom through migration, military organization, diplomacy, and cattle-based wealth.

Mzilikazi: Mzilikazi was the founder and first king of the Ndebele Kingdom, ruling from its formation until his death in 1868. His leadership shaped the kingdom’s migration, political institutions, and settlement.
Lobengula: Lobengula was the second king of the Ndebele Kingdom, succeeding Mzilikazi in 1868 and ruling until 1894. His reign shows how royal authority operated as European pressure intensified.
British South Africa Company: The British South Africa Company was a chartered company that pursued British colonial expansion in southern Africa from 1889. Its settlement and military campaigns brought the kingdom under colonial control.
Ndebele people: The Ndebele are a southern African people whose communities developed from Mzilikazi’s followers and other groups incorporated into the kingdom. The kingdom’s institutions and history remain central to Ndebele collective identity.
Mfecane: The Mfecane was a period of warfare, migration, and political upheaval in southern Africa during the early nineteenth century. The upheavals of this period formed the setting for Mzilikazi’s departure from the Zulu kingdom.
Ndebele regimental system: The Ndebele regimental system organized men into age-based military units that also served political and social functions. Regiments gave the king a means to mobilize and organize the kingdom’s forces.
First Matabele War: The First Matabele War was the 1893 conflict between the Ndebele Kingdom and forces of the British South Africa Company. The war marked the decisive military defeat of Lobengula’s kingdom.
Ndebele language: Southern Ndebele is a Nguni Bantu language spoken chiefly in Zimbabwe. Its spread reflects the kingdom’s formation and the cultural ties it fostered.
Ndebele migration: The Ndebele migration was the movement of Mzilikazi’s followers from southeastern Africa to the region of present-day Zimbabwe. It traces the stages through which the kingdom reached its eventual center.
Ndebele royal court: The Ndebele royal court was the political center where the king and senior officials managed authority, tribute, and diplomacy. The court linked local communities and military leaders to the king.
