Neck

The body region connecting an animal’s head to its trunk. It contains structures that support and move the head while allowing passage between the head and body.

Cervical vertebrae: The vertebrae forming the neck portion of the vertebral column. These bones provide the neck’s central support and protect the upper spinal cord.
Cervical rotation: Rotation of the head and neck around a vertical axis. The neck’s joints and muscles allow the head to turn from side to side.
Whiplash: A neck injury caused by rapid acceleration and deceleration of the head. It demonstrates how sudden motion can strain neck tissues.
Giraffe: A tall African mammal distinguished by its extremely long neck and legs. Its elongated neck shows how far this body region can be extended in one lineage.
Head: The body region containing the brain and major sensory organs. The neck connects directly to the head and supports its movement.
Cervical spine: The section of the vertebral column formed by the cervical vertebrae. Its bones and joints give the neck stability and mobility.
Cervical flexion: Forward bending of the neck that brings the chin toward the chest. It is one of the neck’s primary movements.
Cervical radiculopathy: Pain, weakness, or sensory symptoms caused by irritation of a cervical spinal nerve root. Nerve roots exiting the neck can be compressed or irritated.
Swan: A large waterbird with a long, flexible neck. Its neck contrasts with the short, rigid necks of many other birds.
Trunk: The central body region, excluding the head and limbs. The neck forms the connection between the head and trunk.
