Necromancy

Necromancy is magic that seeks knowledge or power by communicating with the dead or raising them. Its practices appear in ancient religious texts, folklore, and later occult traditions.

Odyssey: An ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer, recounting Odysseus's journey home after the Trojan War. Odysseus performs a ritual to question the prophet Tiresias among the dead.
Evocation: A ritual practice that summons a spirit or supernatural being into a defined place or visible form. Necromantic rites often use evocation to call a deceased person into presence.
John Dee: An English mathematician, astrologer, and adviser to Elizabeth I who pursued communication with angels through scrying. His recorded spirit consultations show how Renaissance occult practice approached supernatural communication.
Goetia: A tradition of ritual magic focused on summoning and commanding spirits, especially demons. Goetic rites target spirits broadly, while necromancy specifically concerns the dead.

Divination: The practice of seeking hidden knowledge or future events through supernatural means. Consulting the dead is one method of divination.
Edward Kelley: An English alchemist and spirit medium who worked with John Dee in the late sixteenth century. Kelley's claimed visions and communications shaped Dee's angelic experiments.
Theurgy: Ritual practice intended to unite a practitioner with divine beings or achieve spiritual transformation. Theurgy seeks divine ascent rather than knowledge or power from deceased people.
Faust: A legendary scholar who bargains with the devil for knowledge, power, or pleasure. Faustian stories share necromancy's theme of seeking forbidden power beyond human limits.
