Negro leagues

The Negro leagues were professional baseball leagues organized primarily for Black players during the era of major-league segregation. They included independent teams and formal leagues, with organization changing over time.

Racial segregation in the United States: A system of laws and social practices that separated people by race and restricted Black Americans’ rights. Segregation in baseball reflected the wider racial order that excluded Black players from the major leagues.
Satchel Paige: A celebrated pitcher who starred in the Negro leagues and later played in Major League Baseball. His exceptional pitching and long career made him one of the leagues’ most famous figures.
Homestead Grays: A successful Negro-league team based in Homestead, Pennsylvania, and Pittsburgh. The Grays’ sustained success and celebrated roster show the strength of top Negro-league clubs.
Baseball color line: The informal and institutional exclusion of Black players from Major League Baseball for much of the twentieth century. The color line created the conditions in which Negro leagues developed and operated.
Moses Fleetwood Walker: A Black catcher who played in the major leagues in 1884, before racial exclusion became entrenched. His brief major-league career preceded the segregation that helped make separate professional leagues necessary.
Josh Gibson: A power-hitting catcher who starred for the Homestead Grays and Pittsburgh Crawfords. His hitting became central to the Negro leagues’ enduring reputation for elite talent.
Kansas City Monarchs: A leading Negro-league team founded in 1920 and based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Monarchs became a durable franchise and a major force in league competition.
Major League Baseball integration: The process by which Black players entered Major League Baseball, beginning with Jackie Robinson in 1947. Integration drew leading players away and weakened the separate leagues’ competitive and financial base.
Negro National League: A professional baseball league founded in 1920 by Rube Foster and Black team owners. Its founding marked the first successful effort to organize a lasting Black major league.
Cool Papa Bell: A swift center fielder who played for several Negro-league teams, especially the St. Louis Stars. His speed and fielding made him one of the leagues’ best-known position players.
