Nehru–Gandhi family

An Indian political family whose members, including Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi, have led the Indian National Congress and held national office.

Jawaharlal Nehru: India’s first prime minister, serving from independence in 1947 until his death in 1964. His premiership established the family’s central role in national government.
Indian National Congress: A major Indian political party founded in 1885 that led the independence movement and governed India for much of its early history. The party became the family’s main vehicle for political leadership.
The Emergency (India): A period of suspended civil liberties and executive rule in India from 1975 to 1977, declared by Indira Gandhi’s government. It remains the most consequential and contested episode of Indira Gandhi’s premiership.
Political dynasty: A family whose members repeatedly hold or seek political office across generations. The family is a prominent Indian example of this form of political continuity.
Indira Gandhi: India’s prime minister for most of 1966–1984 and daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru. She became the family’s most powerful political leader after Nehru.
Indian independence movement: The mass political struggle that ended British rule in India in 1947. Nehru’s leadership in the movement preceded his premiership and the family’s national prominence.
Green Revolution in India: The spread of high-yield crops, irrigation, and modern farming methods that sharply increased Indian food production. Its expansion took place under Indira Gandhi’s government and strengthened food security.
Bharatiya Janata Party: An Indian political party founded in 1980 that has competed with and often displaced Congress in national government. Its rise challenged Congress’s long dominance and the family’s political influence.
Rajiv Gandhi: India’s prime minister from 1984 to 1989 and son of Indira Gandhi. His premiership continued the family’s leadership after Indira’s assassination.
Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan. It framed the first government led by Jawaharlal Nehru.
