Nelson W. Aldrich

Nelson W. Aldrich was a Republican U.S. senator from Rhode Island from 1881 to 1911 who became a leading architect of national financial policy.

Federal Reserve Act: The 1913 law that established the Federal Reserve System and defined its structure and powers. Its passage followed debate over proposals Aldrich helped develop.
Aldrich Plan: A 1911 proposal for a privately governed National Reserve Association to centralize U.S. banking reserves and issue currency. Aldrich’s signature blueprint drew on the commission’s research and confidential consultations.
John D. Rockefeller Jr.: An American philanthropist and son of Standard Oil founder John D. Rockefeller. Aldrich became his father-in-law when his daughter Abby married him.
