Çatalhöyük : A large Neolithic settlement in Anatolia, known for densely packed houses entered through roof openings. Its adjoining mud-brick houses show one way settled communities organized domestic space.
Mudbrick : A building block made by molding and drying earth, often mixed with straw or other tempering material. Mudbrick formed walls at many early farming settlements, including Çatalhöyük and Jericho.
Neolithic : The prehistoric period associated with farming, animal domestication, and increasingly settled communities, beginning at different times in different regions. Its shift toward settled life created new needs for houses, storage, and communal buildings.
Paleolithic architecture : Shelters and built structures made during the Paleolithic, including caves, windbreaks, and constructed dwellings. Its often mobile or temporary shelters contrast with the settled houses common in the Neolithic.
Jericho : An ancient settlement near the Jordan River with occupation extending back to the Natufian and Pre-Pottery Neolithic periods. Its early stone tower and wall are among the best-known monumental works of the Neolithic.
Wattle and daub : A wall-building technique that covers a woven lattice of branches with a mixture of earth, clay, and fiber. It offered a lightweight wall system where timber and suitable plastering materials were available.
Neolithic settlement : A community dwelling place established during the Neolithic, often comprising houses, work areas, and shared spaces. Settlement layouts show how buildings related to movement, production, and neighboring households.
Bronze Age architecture : Buildings and monuments made during the Bronze Age, when metalworking and complex political societies expanded in many regions. Later urban centers and elite monuments developed from, but differed from, Neolithic building traditions.
Skara Brae : A well-preserved Neolithic village in Orkney, Scotland, built largely from stone. Its linked houses and built-in furnishings reveal the layout of a northern settlement.
Megalith : A large stone used alone or with other stones in a prehistoric monument or structure. Megaliths supplied the defining material of many Neolithic tombs and communal monuments.
