Neonatology

Neonatology is the medical subspecialty focused on newborn infants, especially those born prematurely or with serious illness. It combines intensive care with support for development and family involvement.

Neonatal intensive care unit: A hospital unit providing specialized monitoring and treatment for newborns who are premature, critically ill, or medically fragile. This is the setting where neonatologists deliver intensive care to newborns.
Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome: A breathing disorder, chiefly in premature infants, caused by insufficient pulmonary surfactant and immature lungs. It illustrates how organ immaturity can make breathing support central to newborn care.
Gestational age: The duration of pregnancy measured from the first day of the last menstrual period. It helps classify prematurity and interpret an infant’s developmental maturity.
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia: A chronic lung disease affecting some infants, especially those born very prematurely and requiring respiratory support. It is a significant long-term complication associated with intensive respiratory care.
Preterm birth: Birth before 37 completed weeks of pregnancy. Prematurity is a major reason newborns need specialist assessment and treatment.
Apnea of prematurity: Pauses in breathing in premature infants, often reflecting immature control of respiration. Immature respiratory control can cause recurrent episodes requiring monitoring and support.
Birth weight: The weight of an infant measured shortly after birth. Weight helps identify growth-related risk and inform newborn care.
Retinopathy of prematurity: Abnormal development of retinal blood vessels in premature infants, which can threaten vision. Premature infants need screening because this complication may progress without early signs.
Neonatal resuscitation: The immediate support given to a newborn who has difficulty breathing or adapting after birth. Neonatologists may direct advanced support when a newborn does not transition successfully.
Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn: A failure of pulmonary blood pressure to fall normally after birth, limiting oxygen uptake. It shows how an abnormal transition in circulation can become a neonatal emergency.
