Italian Neorealism

Italian Neorealism was a postwar cultural movement that portrayed ordinary life and social conditions, especially through cinema and literature. Its works often used location shooting, nonprofessional actors, and stories of poverty and hardship.

Rome, Open City: Roberto Rossellini’s 1945 film follows resistance fighters and civilians in German-occupied Rome. Its location-based production and wartime setting helped establish neorealist cinema.

Hollywood studio system: A vertically integrated mode of American film production and distribution dominated by major studios. Neorealist production often worked outside studio sets, star conventions, and tightly controlled production.
