Nepalese constituent assembly

An elected body tasked with drafting Nepal’s constitution after the civil war. Nepal’s two constituent assemblies, elected in 2008 and 2013, adopted the Constitution of 2015.

2006 Comprehensive Peace Agreement: The agreement that ended Nepal’s civil war and set out a path toward political transition. It established the political settlement that led to the assembly and its mandate.
Nepalese Civil War: A conflict fought from 1996 to 2006 between Nepal’s Maoist insurgents and the state. The war’s end created the opening for an elected constitution-making body.
Pushpa Kamal Dahal: A Nepalese Maoist leader, also known as Prachanda, who became prime minister after the 2008 election. He led the largest party in the first assembly and headed its first government.
Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal: The republican state established in Nepal after the monarchy was abolished in 2008. The assembly process gave this new state its permanent constitutional structure.
2008 Nepalese Constituent Assembly election: Nepal’s election that chose the first constituent assembly, with the Maoists winning the largest number of seats. It determined the first assembly’s membership and gave the Maoists a leading role.
People's Movement II: The 2006 mass movement that forced King Gyanendra to restore parliament and helped end direct royal rule. It strengthened the political demand for a constituent assembly.
Girija Prasad Koirala: A Nepalese political leader who served as prime minister during the transition from monarchy to republic. He led the government that negotiated the peace settlement and oversaw the assembly’s election.
Madhes movement: A series of political movements by Madhesi communities seeking greater representation and rights in Nepal. Its demands exposed conflicts over inclusion and provincial boundaries in the constitution.
2013 Nepalese Constituent Assembly election: Nepal’s election that chose a second constituent assembly after the first failed to complete a constitution. It replaced the dissolved first assembly and renewed the constitution-making process.
Interim Constitution of Nepal: Nepal’s temporary constitution, promulgated in 2007 to govern the transition before a permanent constitution. It provided the legal framework for the assembly’s election and work.
