Nephrocalcinosis

Nephrocalcinosis is the deposition of calcium salts within kidney tissue. It can impair kidney function and is distinct from stones located in the urinary collecting system.

Hypercalciuria: Excessive calcium excretion in urine, which can promote calcium deposition in the kidneys and urinary stones. High urinary calcium is a common route by which calcium reaches renal tissue.
Primary hyperparathyroidism: Excess parathyroid hormone secretion, usually caused by a parathyroid adenoma or hyperplasia. It can raise blood and urinary calcium, promoting renal deposits.
Renal ultrasonography: An imaging method that uses sound waves to examine the kidneys and urinary tract. Ultrasound commonly detects echogenic renal pyramids associated with medullary deposits.
Nephron: The kidney's microscopic functional unit, which filters blood and modifies the filtrate into urine. Nephron segments determine where calcium and phosphate concentrations can favor precipitation.
Nephrolithiasis: The formation or presence of stones in the kidney or urinary tract. It describes collecting-system stones rather than diffuse mineral deposition in renal tissue.
Hyperoxaluria: Excessive oxalate in urine, increasing the risk of calcium oxalate crystallization. Oxalate can combine with calcium and contribute to renal calcium deposits.
Distal renal tubular acidosis: A renal tubular acidosis in which distal nephron acid secretion is impaired. This subtype is strongly associated with alkaline urine and medullary calcium deposition.
Computed tomography: An imaging technique that combines X-ray measurements to create cross-sectional images of the body. CT can show renal calcification and help distinguish tissue deposits from collecting-system stones.
Loop of Henle: A nephron segment that establishes the kidney's medullary concentration gradient. Its thick ascending limb influences calcium handling and the medullary environment.
Urolithiasis: The formation or presence of calculi anywhere in the urinary tract. Nephrolithiasis is a stone disorder; nephrocalcinosis is calcium deposition within kidney tissue.
