Neptunism

Neptunism was a historical geological theory that all rocks, including basalt, formed through precipitation or deposition from a primordial ocean. It was associated especially with Abraham Gottlob Werner.

Abraham Gottlob Werner: Abraham Gottlob Werner was a German geologist whose influential lectures and classification of rocks shaped eighteenth-century geology. Werner developed and taught the theory that became known as Neptunism.
Primordial ocean: A primordial ocean is a hypothetical early global body of water invoked in historical theories of Earth’s formation. Neptunists treated this ocean as the source from which rocks formed.
Plutonism: Plutonism is the geological theory that many rocks formed through processes involving heat and molten material inside Earth. Plutonists opposed Neptunism by arguing that basalt came from underground molten rock.
Neptunism–Plutonism controversy: The Neptunism–Plutonism controversy was a late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century dispute over whether rocks formed mainly from water or heat. The dispute exposed Neptunism’s central disagreement with explanations based on molten rock.
Freiberg Mining Academy: Freiberg Mining Academy is a German institution founded in 1765 to teach mining and related sciences. Werner taught there, spreading Neptunism among students who carried it across Europe.
Chemical precipitation: Chemical precipitation is the formation of a solid from a solution when dissolved substances become insoluble. Neptunism explained many rocks as precipitates from ancient seawater.
James Hutton: James Hutton was a Scottish geologist whose theory of Earth emphasized continuing geological processes and internal heat. Hutton’s work supported an account of rock formation opposed to Werner’s aqueous system.
Geology: Geology is the science of Earth’s materials, structure, history, and processes. The debate contributed to geology’s emergence as an evidence-based science of Earth history.
Georg Christian Füchsel: Georg Christian Füchsel was a German geologist who used stratigraphic principles to interpret rock formations in the eighteenth century. His sequence-based account of strata helped prepare the geological framework Werner later systematized.
Stratigraphy: Stratigraphy is the study of layered rocks and their sequence, distribution, and age relationships. Neptunists used rock-layer order to reconstruct successive stages of ocean deposition.
