Nerva : Roman emperor from 96 to 98 CE who succeeded Domitian and adopted Trajan as his heir. His accession began the dynasty, and his adoption of Trajan established its succession pattern.
Adoptive succession : A system in which a ruler selects and legally adopts an heir rather than relying solely on biological descent. Several emperors used adoption to designate capable successors, though the pattern was never a formal dynasty-wide rule.
