Nestorius

Nestorius was a fifth-century Christian theologian and archbishop of Constantinople whose teachings about Christ prompted a major controversy over how Christ’s divinity and humanity were united.

Cyril of Alexandria: Cyril of Alexandria was a fifth-century theologian and bishop who defended the unity of Christ against Nestorius. Cyril led the opposition that turned Nestorius’s teaching into a church-wide dispute.
Hypostatic union: The hypostatic union is the Christian doctrine that Christ’s divine and human natures belong to one person. This doctrine states the unity that Nestorius’s opponents believed his language endangered.

Nestorianism: Nestorianism is a label for Christological teachings understood to divide Christ’s divine and human realities too sharply. The term became a broad polemical name for positions associated with Nestorius, often imprecisely.
John of Antioch: John of Antioch was a fifth-century bishop who led a theological faction associated with the Antiochene tradition. His negotiations with Cyril shaped the settlement that followed Nestorius’s condemnation.
Prosopon: Prosopon is an ancient Greek term meaning face or person, used in early Christian debates about Christ. Disagreement over its meaning obscured whether Nestorius taught one person or two in Christ.
