Nettie Stevens

Nettie Stevens (1861–1912) was an American geneticist whose studies of mealworm chromosomes helped establish that X and Y chromosomes determine sex in some species.

Edmund Beecher Wilson: An American zoologist whose independent research linked chromosomes to sex determination. Wilson reached a similar conclusion about sex chromosomes in the same year as Stevens.
X chromosome: A sex chromosome present in humans and many other species, with roles in sex development and inheritance. Stevens identified the X chromosome as part of the chromosome pattern associated with female development in mealworms.
Tenebrio molitor: A darkling beetle, commonly called the yellow mealworm beetle, used in biological research. Stevens studied its reproductive cells and found different chromosome complements in males and females.
