Neumann boundary condition

A boundary condition that prescribes the normal derivative of a field on a domain’s boundary. The homogeneous form sets that derivative to zero, often representing zero flux across the boundary.

Normal derivative: The directional derivative of a function along a boundary’s outward or inward normal. The condition prescribes this derivative at each boundary point.
No-flux boundary condition: A boundary constraint requiring the flux of a conserved quantity through a surface to vanish. For diffusion with constant isotropic diffusivity, it is expressed by a zero normal derivative.
Dirichlet boundary condition: A boundary condition that specifies the value of a field on the boundary of a domain. It fixes boundary values rather than normal derivatives.
Boundary (topology): The set of points separating a topological space from its exterior. Neumann data are prescribed on this geometric edge of the domain.
Divergence theorem: A theorem equating the integral of a vector field’s divergence over a volume with its flux through the boundary. It connects boundary flux conditions to integral conservation laws inside the domain.
Thermal insulation: Reduction of heat transfer between a body and its surroundings. An ideal insulated surface has zero normal heat flux, modeled by homogeneous Neumann data.
Mixed boundary condition: A boundary-value specification using different types of conditions on different parts of a boundary. A problem may impose Neumann data on one boundary segment and other data elsewhere.
Gradient: A vector field pointing in the direction of greatest increase of a scalar field, with magnitude equal to its rate of increase. The normal derivative is the gradient’s component perpendicular to the boundary.
Boundary-value problem: A differential equation problem whose solution is constrained by values or relations on a domain’s boundary. Neumann data are one way to constrain solutions of such problems.
Impermeable boundary: A boundary through which a specified fluid or substance cannot pass. For diffusion or flow, impermeability is often encoded as zero normal flux.
