Neuquén Province

Neuquén is a province in western Argentina, in northern Patagonia, bordering Chile and named for the Neuquén River. Its landscape spans the Andes, lakes, plateaus, and the Vaca Muerta shale formation.

Neuquén River: A river in Argentina that flows east from the Andes through Neuquén Province and joins the Limay River. The river gives the province its name and forms part of its eastern boundary.
Shale gas: Natural gas extracted from low-permeability shale rock, commonly using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Neuquén’s shale deposits have made gas extraction a major industry.
Mapuche people: An Indigenous people of south-central Chile and southwestern Argentina with distinct languages and cultural traditions. Mapuche communities have longstanding ties to the lands now within Neuquén.
Río Negro Province: An Argentine province in northern Patagonia, east of Neuquén and extending to the Atlantic coast. Its shared river basin and eastern landscapes contrast with Neuquén’s landlocked Andean and shale regions.
Limay River: A river in northern Patagonia that flows from Nahuel Huapi Lake to meet the Neuquén River. Together with the Neuquén River, it forms the Río Negro and anchors the province’s eastern hydrology.
Hydraulic fracturing: A method that injects pressurized fluid into rock to create fractures and release oil or gas. It is central to developing the province’s unconventional hydrocarbon resources.
Conquest of the Desert: A series of Argentine military campaigns in the late nineteenth century that expanded state control over Indigenous territories. The campaigns brought Neuquén’s territory under Argentine state control and transformed its settlement.
Mendoza Province: An Argentine province along the Andes, north of Neuquén, known for wine production and mountain landscapes. Both provinces border Chile, but Mendoza’s wine-centered economy contrasts with Neuquén’s energy sector.
Vaca Muerta: A large shale formation in Argentina containing substantial oil and natural gas reserves. This formation underlies much of Neuquén’s recent energy development.
Hydroelectricity: Electricity generated by converting the energy of flowing or falling water. Dams on rivers shared with Río Negro supply power and regulate water flows.
