Neuroanatomy

Neuroanatomy is the study of the nervous system’s physical structure and organization, from individual neurons and connections to the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves.

Neuron: A specialized cell that receives, processes, and transmits information through electrical and chemical signals. Neurons are the cellular units whose shapes and connections form nervous tissue.
Neural circuit: A set of interconnected neurons whose activity produces or shapes a particular pattern of neural processing. Circuits show how local cellular connections form functional units within anatomical regions.
Neurological examination: A clinical assessment of sensory, motor, cognitive, cranial-nerve, and reflex functions. Observed deficits help identify which structures or pathways may be affected.
Camillo Golgi: An Italian physician and scientist who developed a silver-staining method for visualizing nervous tissue. His stain made individual neurons visible for anatomical study.
Neurophysiology: The study of the nervous system’s electrical and chemical activity and how it produces function. It emphasizes neural activity, while neuroanatomy emphasizes physical organization.
Glial cell: A non-neuronal nervous-system cell that supports, protects, or regulates neurons. Glial cells make up much of nervous tissue and shape its local environment.
Corticospinal tract: A descending pathway from the cerebral cortex to the spinal cord that supports voluntary movement. Its course illustrates how a named tract links brain anatomy to spinal motor output.
Lesion localization: The process of inferring a nervous-system lesion’s location from clinical signs and symptoms. It applies anatomical relationships to predict where damage lies.
Santiago Ramón y Cajal: A Spanish neuroscientist whose microscopic studies established neurons as discrete cells and mapped their connections. His drawings and observations founded modern cellular neuroanatomy.
Neurochemistry: The study of chemical processes and molecules involved in nervous-system function. It focuses on molecular composition rather than the spatial arrangement of neural structures.
