Knowra Neuroticism Neuroticism Neuroticism is a personality trait describing a tendency to experience negative emotions, including anxiety, sadness, and irritability. It is one of the major dimensions in the Five-Factor Model of personality.
Five-Factor Model : A personality model organized around openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. It places neuroticism among five broad dimensions used to describe personality.
Negative affectivity : A disposition toward frequent or intense unpleasant emotional states, including distress and irritability. It closely describes the emotional tendency captured by neuroticism.
Anxiety disorder : A group of mental disorders involving excessive fear, anxiety, and related behavioral disturbance. Neuroticism is a broad risk factor for anxiety disorders, not itself a diagnosis.
Emotional stability : A personality dimension describing calmness, steadiness, and resilience to negative emotion. It is the reverse pole of neuroticism in the Five-Factor Model.
Behavioral genetics : The study of genetic and environmental influences on differences in behavior and psychological traits. It estimates inherited contributions to individual differences in neuroticism.

Anxiety : An emotional state involving apprehension, tension, and anticipation of possible threat. Anxiety is a temporary or clinical condition; neuroticism is a broader personality disposition.
Heritability : A population statistic estimating how much variation in a trait is associated with genetic differences in a particular environment. Neuroticism shows heritable variation, but estimates do not determine an individual’s outcome.
