Neustria

Neustria was a western Frankish kingdom and region centered on northern France, especially the area between the Seine and Loire. It was a major political division of the Frankish realm during the Merovingian and early Carolingian periods.

Clovis I: The first Frankish king to unite most of Gaul under his rule, reigning from about 481 to 511. His death divided the Frankish realm among his sons, setting the pattern for Neustria’s emergence.
Merovingian Dynasty: The Frankish royal dynasty that ruled from the fifth to the eighth century. Its kings held Neustria, while succession disputes repeatedly reshaped the kingdom.
Austrasia: The eastern Frankish kingdom, centered on the Rhineland and territories east of Neustria. Its rivalry with Neustria shaped Frankish politics and culminated in Austrasian dominance.

Charles Martel: A Frankish ruler who governed as mayor of the palace from 718 until 741. His rise consolidated the power gained by the Austrasian-led faction after Neustria’s defeat.
Chlothar I: A Merovingian king who reunited the Frankish kingdoms in 558 and ruled until 561. His death again divided the realm, producing political divisions associated with Neustria and its eastern rival.
Fredegund: A sixth-century Frankish queen, wife of Chilperic I, who wielded power amid dynastic conflict. Her court politics and rivalry with Brunhilda became entangled with Neustria’s conflict with Austrasia.
