New Guinea Highlands

The New Guinea Highlands are a mountainous region across the interior of New Guinea, encompassing the island’s central ranges and elevated valleys. They contain some of the island’s highest peaks and densely settled upland areas.

New Guinea: A large island north of Australia, divided between Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. The highlands form the mountainous interior of this island.
Baliem Valley: A highland valley in Papua, Indonesia, centered on the town of Wamena. Its cultivated floor and surrounding mountains typify a major western highland basin.
