New Left

The New Left was a set of political movements that challenged hierarchy, imperialism, and racial and economic injustice, especially from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Port Huron Statement: A 1962 manifesto by Students for a Democratic Society calling for participatory democracy and social change. This founding document gave the U.S. New Left a prominent statement of purpose.
Tom Hayden: A U.S. activist and politician who helped found Students for a Democratic Society and drafted the Port Huron Statement. He articulated an influential U.S. version of New Left participatory democracy.
Participatory democracy: A democratic ideal in which people directly take part in decisions affecting their lives. It was the New Left's alternative to distant, bureaucratic political representation.
Old Left: A term for earlier socialist and communist movements, often organized around class politics and established labor parties. The New Left rejected the Old Left's hierarchy and narrow focus on class.
Anti-Vietnam War movement: A broad movement opposing U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War, especially active during the 1960s and 1970s. New Left organizing helped make opposition to the war a mass political force.
Students for a Democratic Society: A U.S. student organization that became a leading New Left group in the 1960s. Its organizing and public campaigns helped turn New Left ideas into a mass student movement.
C. Wright Mills: A U.S. sociologist whose work criticized concentrated power and called for a political left independent of the Soviet model. His 1960 letter popularized the phrase “New Left” in the United States.
Anti-imperialism: Opposition to the political, military, or economic domination of one country by another. It linked domestic activism to liberation movements confronting colonial and superpower control.
Stalinism: The authoritarian political system associated with Joseph Stalin's rule of the Soviet Union. New Left critics opposed its repression and treated it as a betrayal of socialist emancipation.
Counterculture of the 1960s: A youth-driven cultural movement that challenged conventional values and lifestyles during the 1960s. New Left politics overlapped with countercultural experiments but was not identical to them.
