New Right

The New Right is a conservative political movement that gained influence in the United States during the late twentieth century, combining free-market economics, social conservatism, and opposition to federal expansion.

Barry Goldwater: An Arizona senator and 1964 Republican presidential nominee who became a formative figure in modern American conservatism. His campaign mobilized conservative activists and supplied an early model for the movement’s electoral politics.
Supply-side economics: An economic approach that seeks to increase production through incentives such as lower taxes and reduced regulation. It provided an economic rationale for the New Right’s tax-cutting agenda.
Moral Majority: A political organization founded by Jerry Falwell in 1979 to mobilize religious conservatives. It turned religious-right organizing into a visible electoral force aligned with the New Right.
New Deal liberalism: A political tradition supporting an active federal government to regulate the economy and provide social welfare. The New Right opposed the expansion of federal programs associated with this tradition.
Southern strategy: A Republican electoral approach that sought support among white Southern voters amid conflicts over civil rights and federal power. It helped reshape the coalition within which the New Right gained national influence.
Social conservatism: A political outlook that seeks to preserve or restore traditional social norms and institutions. It names a major ideological current within the New Right coalition.
National Rifle Association: A US membership organization that advocates gun rights and promotes firearm education and training. Its political mobilization connected gun-rights advocacy to the conservative electoral coalition.
Great Society: A set of US domestic programs launched under President Lyndon B. Johnson to fight poverty and expand civil rights, education, and health care. Its federal social programs became a prominent target of New Right criticism.
Christian Right: A movement of religious conservatives seeking to influence public policy and electoral politics. Its organizing expanded the New Right’s social-conservative base.
Anti-communism: Opposition to communist ideology, movements, or governments. Cold War opposition unified New Right activists around a strong national-security posture.
