New Siberian Islands

The New Siberian Islands are a Russian Arctic archipelago between the Laptev Strait and De Long Strait, spanning the East Siberian and Laptev seas. They include the Anzhu Islands, Lyakhovsky Islands, and De Long Islands.

Anzhu Islands: An island group in the New Siberian Islands, including Kotelny Island, Faddeyevsky Island, and Novaya Sibir. This central group makes up a large part of the archipelago.
Yakov Permyakov: A Russian explorer and merchant who reported islands northeast of the Lena River in the early eighteenth century. His report helped prompt Russian exploration of the archipelago.
Northern Sea Route: A shipping route along Russia’s Arctic coast connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The archipelago lies beside a key section of this route.
Kotelny Island: The largest island in the New Siberian Islands, located in the Anzhu group. Its size and position make it the archipelago’s central geographic reference.
Permafrost carbon feedback: A climate feedback in which warming thaws permafrost, releasing greenhouse gases that can cause further warming. The islands’ carbon-rich frozen ground may contribute to this feedback as it thaws.
Lyakhovsky Islands: An island group in the southern New Siberian Islands, separated from the mainland by the Laptev Strait. These islands form the archipelago’s southern sector.
Pyotr Anjou: A Russian naval officer and Arctic explorer who surveyed parts of the New Siberian Islands in the 1820s. The Anzhu Islands take their name from his surveys.
