New Sweden

New Sweden was a Swedish colony along the Delaware River from 1638 until the Dutch conquest in 1655. It centered on the lower Delaware Valley in present-day Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

New Sweden Company: A Swedish trading company organized to establish and supply a colony in North America. It financed the expedition that founded New Sweden.
Fort Nya Göteborg: A Swedish fort established in 1643 on Tinicum Island in the Delaware River. It served as a colonial administrative center under Governor Johan Printz.
Christina of Sweden: Queen of Sweden from 1632 to 1654, during much of New Sweden’s existence. The colony was named for her during her reign.
Landing of the Swedes at the Delaware: The 1638 arrival of Swedish colonists who established Fort Christina on the Delaware River. This expedition began New Sweden as a permanent colony.
