New Taipei City

New Taipei City is a special municipality in northern Taiwan that surrounds Taipei City and extends across much of the island’s northern coast.

Taiwan: An island in East Asia governed by the Republic of China, with Taipei as its capital. New Taipei City is one of Taiwan’s six special municipalities.
Tamsui: A riverside district in New Taipei City known for its historic waterfront and sunset views. Its old street and riverfront are among the municipality’s best-known destinations.
Taipei County: A former county in northern Taiwan whose territory became New Taipei City in 2010. The municipality inherited the county’s territory and local institutions.
Taipei metropolitan area: A densely populated urban region centered on Taipei and extending across neighboring municipalities. New Taipei City contains much of the metropolitan area’s suburbs and commuter communities.
Special municipality of Taiwan: A top-level administrative division in Taiwan with status comparable to a province. This status gives New Taipei City direct administration at the central-government level.
Jiufen: A hillside settlement in Ruifang District known for its historic gold-mining streets and teahouses. Its preserved lanes draw visitors to the municipality’s northeastern hills.
2010 Taiwan municipal reorganization: A reform that upgraded Taipei County to a special municipality on December 25, 2010. This reorganization created New Taipei City in its present administrative form.
Urban sprawl: The outward spread of low-density development from an urban center into surrounding land. Growth beyond Taipei’s boundary has shaped settlement across New Taipei City.
District (Taiwan): A local administrative division used within Taiwan’s cities and counties. New Taipei City is subdivided into 29 districts.
Yehliu Geopark: A coastal park in Wanli District famous for wind- and wave-eroded rock formations. It showcases the distinctive geology of New Taipei City’s north coast.
