New Valley Governorate

New Valley Governorate is an administrative region in southwestern Egypt, spanning much of the Western Desert and including the Kharga and Dakhla oases.

Western Desert: The western portion of Egypt’s Sahara, extending from the Nile Valley to the Libyan border. Most of the governorate lies within this broad desert region.
Desert agriculture: Crop and livestock production adapted to arid environments and scarce water. Oasis farming sustains settlements where rainfall is extremely limited.
Egyptian governorates: Egypt’s first-level administrative divisions, each governed by a governor. New Valley is one of the country’s governorates.
Libya: A North African country west of Egypt, bordering it across the Sahara. New Valley approaches Egypt’s western international frontier.
Kharga: The capital city of New Valley Governorate, located in Kharga Oasis. Kharga concentrates the governorate’s administration and services.
Dakhla Oasis: A settled depression in Egypt’s Western Desert, west of Kharga Oasis. Dakhla is one of the governorate’s principal inhabited oases.
Groundwater in Egypt: Underground water reserves that supply communities and agriculture across Egypt. Groundwater is essential to farming and daily life in the governorate’s oases.
Matruh Governorate: An Egyptian governorate covering the northwestern coast and adjoining Western Desert. New Valley was separated from Matruh in the reorganization that created the governorate.
Sudan: A country south of Egypt, sharing a long border along the Nile region and desert. The governorate extends toward Egypt’s southern border with Sudan.
Mut: The principal town of Dakhla Oasis in New Valley Governorate. Mut anchors settlement and services in the Dakhla area.
